Monthly Stats Show Signs of Improvement For Port Columbus, Rickenbacker

COLUMBUS – August statistics for Port Columbus International Airport and Rickenbacker International Airport begin to show signs of improvements.

In August Port Columbus experienced a 3.8 percent decrease in passengers compared to the same month the previous year. A total of 545,096 passengers traveled through the airport in August compared to 566,550 in August 2008. Year-to-date 4,158,151 passengers have used Port Columbus, down 14 percent from 2008. Figures earlier in the year showed monthly decreases by as much as 27 percent.

“Although passenger traffic remained down for the month of August, the decrease follows national trends for reduced passenger traffic,” explained David Whitaker, Vice President of Business Development & Communications. “We are beginning to see signs of improvement. As the economy continues to rebound we fully expect that activity at both airports will continue to stabilize.”

Port Columbus provides 150 daily departures to 32 airports. The 10 air carriers at Port Columbus include Air Canada Jazz, AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, Midwest Connect, Northwest, Southwest, United, US Airways and the regional affiliates associated with many of these major airlines.

At Rickenbacker International Airport over 12 million pounds of cargo moved through the airport in August, which equates to a 24 percent drop compared to August 2008. Year-to-date cargo numbers reflect the movement of nearly 136.6 million pounds, which is down 28 percent from the previous year. Figures earlier in the year showed monthly decreases by as much as 43 percent.

Rickenbacker is a multi-modal cargo airport that features an impressive network of freight forwarders and cargo airlines such as FedEx, UPS, Evergreen International, Kalitta and Atlas as well as a U.S. Foreign-Trade Zone.
